Dr. Mendelson is currently in the clinical practice of psychiatry. He was formerly Professor of Psychiatry and Clinical Pharmacology, and director of the Sleep Research Laboratory, at the University of Chicago. Dr. Mendelson earned an MD degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and completed a residency in psychiatry there as well. He has held professorships at Ohio State University and the State University of New York at Stony Brook, was Chief of the Section on Sleep Studies at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, MD, and Director of the Sleep Disorders Center at the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Mendelson is a past president of the Sleep Research Society. Among his honors is the William C. Dement Academic Achievement Award from the American Sleep Disorders Association/American Academy of Sleep Medicine as well as a Special Award in Sleep and Psychiatry from the National Sleep Foundation, and he is a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Mendelson has authored four books and numerous peer-reviewed papers on various aspects of sleep research and psychiatry. My Thoughts:
Recently, I reviewed a previous book written by Mendelson, Understanding Medicines for Anxiety. Both books have been eye-opening in understanding how these types of medications work. In understanding how a medication works that a patient has been prescribed, it makes the patient and family feel knowledgeable about what is happening; as well as a bit in control about the aspect of knowing what the medication will do and how it will be done. So often a physician will write a prescription and the patient will take the medication not knowing what happens after the pill is swallowed. I’m a person who wants to know!

Gillian Marchenko is an author, speaker, wife, mother of four daughters and advocate for individuals with special needs. Her memoir, Sun Shine Down, chronicles her experience having a baby with Down syndrome while serving as a missionary in Ukraine.

Gillian writes and speaks about faith, depression, imperfection, adoption and parenting kids with Down syndrome. With the Joni & Friends Chicago Teaching Team, she helped churches cultivate inclusive environments for individuals with disabilities and their families.

Where is Jesus in depression?
“Yes, but what about Jesus?” friends ask later on. It is a valid question. If others look at my life, I hope they’ll see that faith is important. I believe in the story that some people let waft through their minds only at Christmas: that Christ was born of a virgin, lived a perfect life, died a death we all deserve, so that we can have a bridge to God. Sergei is a minister. I spent years as a missionary in a foreign country. The point of my faith is that God came to me so that I can be with him.

What about Jesus? I think. When depression takes over, everyone in my life falls away, including him. I can’t pray, or read, or talk. When I am not stuck in a pocket of depression, I pray for help and healing. “Take this away, or at least help me figure out how to handle it better,” I whisper, expectant. But a concrete response doesn’t come. All I get is silence. How does one keep faith in silence?

There is a story in the New Testament about a woman who hemorrhaged and bled for years. Jesus walked by her one day in a village, and she reached out and grabbed on to his robe. Feeling power leave him, he turned to her and said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has healed you” (Matthew 9:22). I thrust my hands out in front of me. I am a little girl lost in a dark house alone. I need to find that robe. I want to be healed. But there is no robe. My faith, so far, has not made me well.

Why doesn’t Jesus respond to my cries for help? Does he care? Is he even there? Don’t I have enough faith? * * * * * A Christian counselor once commented on people hiding from God. “Think about it. The very first people in the history of the world, Adam and Eve, hid from God when they realized their nakedness after eating the forbidden fruit. Hiding is instinctual,” he said.

I’m in no way the first person in the history of the world to hide, but I feel like I am. I hid from my family and friends and from God. I was so ashamed of the depth of my depression, of my menacing thoughts and lack of interest in life, that I found it easier to turn up the volume on my television show than to bow my head and pray.

My friend Anne once said that being around people when you are depressed is like being asked to heal your broken leg by running a marathon. Yes. Friendships fell away. People cared, but after a while they got used to my being off limits. . . . I stopped returning phone calls and didn’t answer email. My cognition slipped. I could no longer carry on a decent conversation. If I did, it was the most asinine, one-sided conversation imaginable. “I just saw it,” my friend Amy said one time after church. “I saw your mood crash.”

Two of my friends had babies and I didn’t congratulate them. I hid from my parents’ and my sister’s phone calls. My sister got the hint and stayed away. That’s what we do when one of us isn’t well. We give space and wait for the other person to get better, for them to come to us. My mom kept calling. I ignored her.

The girls watched me with wide eyes and stepped around me when they’d see me in the hallway or the kitchen. Sergei, now understanding the severity of my situation, started bringing my meals to my room. Sometimes I heard him on the phone with my mom and sister outside my bedroom door, talking about me. Yes, she’s in bed. We’re doing okay but I’ll let you know if you need to come. It sounded like he was whispering about a loved one in hospice.

His opinion had changed since that day I told him about major depressive disorder, because the woman lying in bed was no longer his wife. He sat near me and rubbed my back.

“Gillian, we are here for you. Please try. Pray. Let’s fix it. Talk to me.” I’d turn away. “Okay, then don’t worry about the kids. Don’t worry about anything. We’re all right. If you can’t get up, that’s okay, I guess. Just rest.”

Sergei had to wonder how we got here. I never imagined I would marry a pastor, and I don’t think either us could have guessed that one day he would be married to a woman who succumbed to major depressive disorder. His eyes sadly looked me over, and he left the room, closing the door.

You are a terrible mom. You are losing your mind. You are ruining your family’s life. You should swallow some pills and die.

My jaw grabbed hold of self-deprecating ideas, and in a sick way, they almost brought me comfort. Resignation. The ability to give up. The suspicion had existed inside me all along: my true identity looked more like this. This was who I should be.

When you are depressed, time becomes an enemy. You either have too much of it, like a sprawling Nebraska cornfield, or you’ve wasted it, your moments thrown into a heap and lit with a match. Burned up. Irretrievable. Each second holds an exorbitant amount of pain. It traps you. You feel each beat. Minutes are full and long as they crawl toward the new hour, and you do nothing but try to hold still and live through them. Time is wasted because you concentrate on living through each moment. You look back, you search your memory, but all you see is a heavy cloud of hurt, confusion and black. You don’t know what to do. You don’t know how to handle it. So you cower. You hide.

My Review:
I recently read a book by Amy Simpson, Blessed Are The Unsatisfied: Finding Spiritual Freedom in an Imperfect World. In this book, Still Life is quoted: “I cannot begin to understand why so many, indeed all of us, struggle on earth. But when I think about the Trinity in perfect community with one another, I can’t help but think that our struggles and our pain pull community out of us sinners who otherwise would think we were happy and filled up with Facebook and Grey’s Anatomy reruns.” Quote from page 132 in Still Life. After reading this quote, I ordered the book from Amazon. The book by Amy Simpson will be reviewed soon.

I personally know people close to me who have mental health disorders. My son is bi-polar and has PTSD. He is doing well with medication and therapy. My husband has a depressive problem but will not acknowledge it. He will not follow his doctors advice. He will not take medication prescribed for depression. I’ve spent this summer reading books on this topic, as well as other similar topics. I’ve been married 35 years. My husband has had a depression problem since before I knew him. I’ve chosen to remain married despite this hardship.

Still Life, resonated with me in two strong ways:
1. The husband/father/caregiver. He cares for every function in the home, family, and Marchenko during her depressive episodes. I can relate to this first point.
2. A quote Marchenko on page 33. This quote gave me a new perspective of what it is like to have depression.

People assume depression is about emotions: a person is sad; a person is down. But I’ve come to realize that depression is about disappearing. you become nothing. Feelings fly away. There is no future. No past. Your body becomes a shell with nothing inside. And the deeper you fall into depression, the more you become a shadow of yourself and the harder it is to pretend that you are still you, that you are okay, because even you forget who you are.

Still Life is deeply personal and transparent. Of any other book I’ve read on this subject, Still Life, stands out in helping me to understand how the person is subsisting in the pit of depression.

Gillian Marchenko defines several symptoms in the depressive person: depression amnesia, assumes fault, sleeps most of the time, denial, negative thoughts, and tries to pretend.
She reached out for help by joining a depressive study. This led to searching for a therapist who worked with her and was supportive. Marchenko is quick to state medication is one of the steps, but therapy is important. It’s stressful to find the “right” therapist for the depressive person. It requires searching and interviewing. For a depressive person, the stress of looking for a therapist can be too much.
Through the book I saw pivotal moments. For example, when she realized “depression is an illness.”
Another example is from page 173.

I’m beginning to understand that for a lot of us health comes in layers. You make it through one level or layer, and you have to learn to be thankful for that, for getting that far. You don’t get healed with the switch of a wand. God doesn’t nod and change you. He is not the genie and her wiggly nose in I Dream of Jeannie…How can I live with depression? The answer is, “can.” The answer is, “live.” The healing is the living.

Marchenko’s husband is a pastor. His story is related to us by her voice. He is a remarkable person to be committed to Marchenko. He shows through as a person of enduring faith and love.

Summary:
Understanding and Loving a Person With Depression has been written with the intention of education and help for those who love a person with depression. It is a book of encouragement. It is considered a guidebook for the people who live with and love a person with depression.

My Thoughts:
Understanding and Loving a Person With Depression is a beginning point in education about depression. I’ve read several books and articles about depression, this is why I consider this particular book to be a starting point.
•Statistics are given about people who have depression in the US.
•The different types of depressions are listed and defined.
•Questions for the caregiver/spouse are encouraged. For example: “become a student of the depressive.” Page 24.
•Individual chapters are given for depression in men, women, and adolescents.
•Early attachments in childhood are taught. I enjoyed this chapter, because it talked about having a close bond with one parent over another. Also, the security of these attachments. And, how the attachments make us feel about ourselves at the core level.
•Another favorite chapter is on forgiveness. Information on forgiveness is quoted from a book by Dr. Fred Luskin. There was a time in my life when I did not fully understand what forgiveness meant. “Forgiveness is for you and not the offender.” “Forgiveness does not mean reconciling with the offender.” Page 115, 116. These are just two of the examples given (and the two I’ve not understood in the past.)
